Strayer University, formerly Strayer College of Washington, D. C., is a private, for-profit educational institution. The Strayer University campuses are owned by Strayer Education, Inc., headquartered in Arlington, Virginia.
   Strayer University specializes in higher education for working adults seeking career advancement. the regional accreditor for both Washington, D. C. and Virginia.
   Strayer University is a non-residential institution; none of its campuses have dormitories or other housing. Students commute from off-campus.

History

S. Irving Strayer founded a small Maryland college in 1892, Strayer's Business College of Baltimore City. In 1969, the school was renamed Strayer College when it received licensure to grant the Bachelor of Science degree. Authorization to grant the Master of Science degree followed in 1987. In 1996, Strayer Education, Inc., was established to take Strayer College public and raised capital for expansion. This expansion included the creation of Strayer University Online, an online college, in Newington, Virginia. In 1998, Strayer College was granted university status by the District of Columbia Education Licensure Commission and became Strayer University.
   Over 115 years, the schools expanded to 45 campuses in the District of Columbia and 11 states, including Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
   According to MSNBC, Strayer and DeVry Institute produced the most students with degrees in computer science of any college in America in 2001.

Strayer Education

Strayer Education, Inc., is a publicly traded corporation, a holding company for the college and other assets. The corporation was established in 1996 to take what was then Strayer College public and raise capital for expansion. This expansion included the creation of Strayer University Online, an online college.
